Mountain countries to meet in March

|

The Ministry of Environment is preparing to organise a meeting of mountain countries — that has been postponed twice — to discuss climate change in mountainous areas in March.

“We are working hard to organise the climate change meeting in March,” said Environment Secretary Krishna Gyawali.

At the high-level meeting held in Copenhagen of Denmark in 2009, Nepal had announced to develop a global platform of mountain countries to promote the agenda of mountains where climate change impact is high due to melting of ice.

The then prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal had said Nepal would organise the mountain countries’ meeting in 2010. However, the meet did not take place, and the second date set for 2011 was also missed.

“The two meetings were cancelled for want of time for preparation. We will succeed in hosting the summit this time,” added Gyawali.

According to the ministry, about 50 countries — most of them are mountain countries while the rest are observers and donors — have been invited to attend the meet.

Sine 2009, Nepal has organised more than five international-level meetings to harness the support of global community in its anti-climate change effort — Mountain Initiative.
