Works on govt formation kicks off

Following the election of president and vice president, the race to form the new government has started.

Notwithstanding the Maoist party’s statement not to join the government, other political parties have said that the former being the largest party in the CA must lead the government under its premiership.

The decks for the formation of new government were cleared after the president and vice president swore in and with the formal resignation of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala – who tendered his resignation to president Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, moments after the latter took oath of office, Wednesday.

Reports say that the President will confer with leaders of the major political parties and legal experts.

And the political parties are due to engage in internal and inter-party talks on the government’s formation.

The Constituent Assembly (CA), too, has unanimously elected Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) candidate Subas Nemwang Thursday for the post of CA chair.

The three-party alliance among Nepali Congress (NC), UML and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) has divided president, vice president and CA chair among themselves.

Analysts believe that the newly elected president could soon urge the largest party to form the government.
