Students’ strike hit public life for second straight day

Nepalmountainnews Report | 24 Jul 2008

Due to the transport strike called on by eight student unions, public life across the nation has been crippled for the second consecutive day Thursday.

Students affiliated to different parties have announced indefinite strike for public vehicles demanding full implementation of the state-set transportation fares and student concession.

A meeting between the government and the agitating students who called a nationwide public transport strike Wednesday protesting the failure to implement the agreed fares and student concession ended inconclusively.

The student protest has badly affected the vehicular movement in the capital form early today.

General public relying on public vehicles have been forced to bear the brunt of the strike.

The long route vehicles coming in and going out from the valley has come to a grinding halt.

The meeting held at the Ministry of Labour and Transport has been put off until this evening after the dialogue between the Labour Secretary Shyam Mainali and student representatives could make no headway.

Nepal Students Union leader Ram Prasad Adhikari informed that the meeting was put off for a while due to swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected President.
