Shrawan Sankranti being celebrated today

Nepalmountainnews Report | 16 Jul 2008

Nepalis across the country and abroad are celebrating the Hindu festival Shrawan Sankranti with much feting today.

People who were busy in their fields for the whole month in Ashad (June/July) wash up their hands and feet and sit for yummy foods and cuisine with their family and relatives to celebrate the day.

The day is also called as Karkat Sankranti as the Sun, according to the solar calendars, shines up at the south of the earth above the Karkat line (line of Capricorn) from the day.

It is also believed that the festival is being celebrated to keep the water-burn diseases like scabies and itches at the bay.

With the belief that worshiping a demon named 'Kandarak' on the day with flowers, fruits among others such skin diseases would not affect them, people used to throw a 'Luto' (collection of medical herbs including Kukurdino, KagBhalayo, Kurilo, PaniSaro, DeviSaro, PaniAmala and Pureni) in all directions of their homes.
