Nepali Congress (NC), which earlier said that it will remain in opposition if the presidential post was rejected for the party, has concluded to contest the president election slated for July 19.
An informal meeting of the NC central members held at Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala's official resident Baluwatar today decided to name one of its party leaders as the top post candidate.
However, the party is yet to finalize the name for the post.
The NC has reached the decision to bring its leader in the presidential race, after its attempt to nominate PM Koirala in the post failed and also all the meetings with the Maoist went futile.
Earlier, the NC had been claiming the post of constitutional president as the second largest party in the CA stating that if the Maoists as the largest party can claim the post of executive Prime Minister.
But it is learnt that the party will only name its candidate if the Maoist and UML nominated a common candidate for the post.
As the major political parties failed to forge an agreement on posts of president, vice-president and CA chair even after two months after the conduction of the historical CA April 10 poll, the political parties finally decided to put the issues to a vote at the 601 member CA.
