Three Nepalis nationals including one women rights activist cum lawyer and two ophthalmologists have been honored with two different prestigious international awards for their outstanding performances in their respective fields.
Among the winners were Sapana Pradhan Malla, a noted women rights activist and lawyer and two ophthalmologists Dr Badri Prasad Badu and Dr Raghunandan Byanju.
According to the Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation, a United States based philanthropic organization, this year's Gruber Women's Rights Prize has been conferred to Malla for being the "driving force behind the passage of legislation to criminalize marital rape and in the drafting of a Gender Equality Amendment Act and a model Human Trafficking Act".
Along with Malla, who is also the Constituent Assembly (CA) member, the other two recipients of the prestigious award given for their fight for gender equality in their respective societies are Yanar Mohammad, a co-founder of Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq, and Dr Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian - a leading feminist scholar, therapist and activists in Palestine.
The three award-winning women will share cash prize of $ 500,000 and receive a gold medal each.
2 Nepali ophthalmologists conferred int'l award
Meanwhile, Dr Badu and Dr Byanju were recently conferred the awards by the world convention of ophthalmologists in recognition of their contribution for the treatment of eye related diseases in Nepal.
The convention was jointly organized by Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and International College of Ophthalmology in Hong Kong.
Dr Badu is the head of Department of Ophthalmology at BP Koirala Institute of Health Science whereas Dr Byanju is associated with Lumbini Eye Hospital.
