Eldest Everest summiteer's aide loses limbs, live in crunch

While, Min Bahadur Serchan, is being praised allover for his courage he showed to ascend the world's highest peak Everest, his climbing assistance Dharma Bahadur Rai, who helped him all the way to and from the top of the world has to cut both of his hands and feet.

The climbing assistance of the world's eldest climber Serchan has lost both of his hands and fingers of feet while on treatment. His hands and feet were engorged by snow.

Rai has been undergoing treatment in TU teaching hospital for the last 20 days. And now only his right-hand thumb and left leg are attached with the body.

"I have to open my gloves while putting on cloths, shoes and socks to Sherchan dai (brother)," Rai told Kantipur. "I didn't have small gloves. That took 10-15 minutes to put on all to him. The minor fault then turn grave today," ha said adding that he only had feather gloves during the expedition.

Rai, a permanent resident of Nechabatashey, Solukhumbhu, has been carrying out tourism business in the capital for 17 years.

The six-member expedition team constituted in leadership of shortest climbing record holder (8 hrs) Pemba Dorje Sherpa, to give a record finish to the "Senior Citizen Mount Everest Expedition", comprised Rai and Bir Bahadur Gurung among others.

"The situation may not have come in case of early treatment," lamented Rai expressing his sorrow for not being able to carry out his business anymore. He said that the insurance company has also betrayed him. "We even have not received the insurance money yet".

Another climbing assistance of Serchan, Gurung also said that they were cheated. "We have gone to assist Serchan dai (brother) after I and Dharma were told to give five lakhs each," Gurung said, adding, "Except one lakhs got before departure, we get nothing".

Eldest climber Serchan, however, said a process has already begun to provide them insurance money. "To allot from the company and the government, I am lobbying through prime minister's office," he told the daily.
