Tourism sector worried on negative impact of climate change

Nepalmountainnews Report | 1 Jul 2008

Despite the fact that Nepal is a famous destination for tourists, people involved in tourism sector said the climate change could have a negative impact on the country's tourism sector.

Though the tourism sector has not suffered till the date, but it could be seriously affected in the face of changing climate, experts said.

They are worried as Nepal's rich biodiversity is decreasing day by day. The country's tourism sector will have to suffer due to the effect of climate change, as instances of glacier formation, shortening of winter season, summer season getting hotter and unusual rainfall patterns as a result of climate change could have adverse impact on tourism sector.

“The habitats for wild animals are also changing. Perennial rivers are becoming seasonal. Daffodils, one of the centers of attraction for the tourists, have nowadays no particular time of flourishing.”

According to the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) preliminary study, the climate change has been affecting mainly the mountainous areas.

The snow is melting rapidly and glaciers are being formed affecting the whole region, it added.

On an average global temperature is rising by 0.06 degree centigrade a year but the same is 0.08 degree centigrade for the high Himalayas.

According to the NTNC official working in Energy and Climate Change, the ratio of carbon production in Nepal to America is 1:42. "Though we are a low carbon-producing country, we are being affected by the high carbon producing countries,” he said.
