Nepalis going overseas for jobs go up by 22.44pc

The number of Nepalis going overseas for jobs during the first eleven months of the current fiscal year has gone up by 22.44 percent compared to the figures recorded during the same period last fiscal year.

According to an official data compiled by the Department of Labor and Employment Promotion (DoLEP), 39524 more Nepali job seekers has left their home country in search of green pasture comparing to the number same period last year.

According to the government record, the number of workers leaving for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the first country to ink a labor pact with Nepal, almost doubled to 41,384. Saudi Arabia saw a moderate 13 percent rise in arrival of Nepali workers to 37,544.

Despite a dwindling number of Nepali workers preferring to go Malaysia, this rapidly developed economy is still retaining its position as the second largest market, receiving 45,680 in the first 11 months of the 2007/08 fiscal year. The figure is more than 30 percent less than that of last year's during the corresponding period.

Qatar, which has been witnessing rapid infrastructure developments in recent years, welcomed 76,899 Nepali workers, up by 52 percent compared to last year. 23,138 Nepalis left the country between mid-May and mid-June for foreign labor destinations. Out of these, 821 were women.

According to DoLEP's figures, 28,349 workers were granted prior approvals in the 11th month of the fiscal year.

Qatar continued to remain this year’s most preferred destination receiving 7,301 Nepalis workers during the review month. Malaysia descended to the third position welcoming 4,256 Nepali workers in the month. The booming South East Asian nation has been replaced by Saudi Arabia that took in 5,455 Nepalis during the month.

The UAE sourced 4,041 workers from Nepal while Bahrain, the latest country to sign a labor pact with Nepal, welcomed 691 Nepali job seekers during the month.

77 complaints against cheating were filed at the DoLEP during the months seeking Rs 24.7 million in compensation. Of that, DoLEP settled Rs 6 million from the accused parties.
