May 27 deadline to King to quit palace; Forceful eviction if denied: Prachanda

Nepalmountainnews Report | 14 May 2008

Supremo of the Communist Party of Nepal Prachanda has revealed that he had given May 27 deadline to king Gyanendra to accept the people's verdict and leave the palace by then. "I have sent a message to King Gyanendra, suggesting him to leave Narayanhiti Palace by May 27," Prachanda told reporters in Ilam Tuesday adding that the King could face forceful eviction from the palace if he refused to quit voluntarily.

“We have advised him to live like a commoner or else we will have to use force to kick him out,” he told.

May 27 is a day before the first sitting of the Constituent Assembly (CA) formally abolishes monarchy and declares the country a republic. The PM on Monday has called for the first CA meeting on May 28.

Stating that if the King cooperated with the political process he would be given the rights enjoyed by ordinary citizens, Prachanda made his party's stance clear that it would not accept any form of monarchy. king-prachanda.jpg

Prachanda's 'ultimatum' comes a day after he met former royalist minister and chairman of Rasatriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal, Kamal Thapa, and, through him, reportedly conveyed his message to the King.

Prachanda was in Ilam for inauguration of a meeting of the party's Limbuwan State Council.

Meanwhile, reports from Pokhara said, Maoist second-in-command Dr Baburam Bhattarai, backing his supremo's stance said, “The first CA meet on May 28 will formally abolish the monarchy and the king should quit the palace and lead a civilian life before that.”

If king did not quit the palace as per the people’s mandate, people would themselves vacate the palace, he warned. He added that the Maoists were even ready to talk to the king if he wanted so before quitting the palace.

Saying that Prachanda would be the first president of Nepal, Bhattarai labelled the talks about making PM Koirala the president as only rumours. He also called PM Girija Prasad Koirala to resign at the earliest to pave way for Maoists.
