Interview with king Gyanendra

For the first time after the 2006 April uprising that forced him to relinquish power and handover it to the people King Gyanendra grants a special interview to the chief editor of the Rastravani weekly, Mr. Hari Lamsal. During his talking King Gyanendra spoke a lot on the current political situations and the role of monarchy in the changed context. Excerpts :

Your Majesty why did you keep mum for over such a long period?

We assumed a mode of silence because we desired the peace process to go logical end. I have been listening properly and I know what is going on here, the people cannot either speak owing to several known and unknown constraints.

I feel that in the name of democracy, the physical infrastructures of the country are being devastated, which I presume is not democratic. People cannot be taken for granted for all time to come.

Your Majesty what is your wish?

Lasting Peace, a functioning democracy and a strengthened Nationalism. What system of governance will have to be there should clearly be in existence as per the wishes of the people and that is suitable for the Nepali soil…so that we do not have to bow our heads down.

Why your Majesty then assume mode of silence?

Silence is also an action. Our silence has a meaning underneath, those who have understood it they have understood it properly else they are ignoring it. Some have understood my silence, some pose not to have understood and some simply ignore it.

Nepali people have their own identification to which the monarchy believes in. It is not enough to talk only about the city but it concerns equally the poor and needy people far in the remote hills.

What is the analysis of monarchy in your Majesty's view?

Monarchy in Nepal has a precious history far beyond than national integration. His Majesty Prithivi Narayan Shah has united the nation into one…think where will be Nepalis now if he had not united the country. I take libel to the father of the nation is same like as the libel of the self and of the nation. How is it if we build up a habit to correct ourselves rather being critical to others?

How your Majesty is planning to institutionalize the monarchy now?

The institution survived mainly as per the wishes of the people. The Nepali monarchy has never asked for power. In the entire history of the institution many ups and downs have come so many times, however, the institution survived mainly as per the wishes of the people. So we through any means have tried to restore peace and stability in the country. We must accept the fact that we failed to achieve success. And, it seems country and the people are bearing the same now. It is now proving in some ways that our endeavors were correct. Monarchy never concerns politics neither should it be. It should be twisted as per the wish of the Nepali people. Democracy has been deteriorating, so a move forging a strong blend of monarchy and democracy is the need of the time.
