Four held with tiger parts

Police has arrested four people in possession of tiger parts, including bones, palm and moustache.

Those arrested on Monday night include Melina Thapa, Kishore Dhakal, Anju Thapa and Ram Acharya of Gorkha and presently residing at Gongobu-5 inKathmandu. The tiger parts were seized from the rented quarters of Melina Thapa, based on a tip-off, police said.

Police have initiated further investigation into the incident.

AirAsia’s benefits declines

Southeast Asia’s largest budget carrier AirAsia on Wednesday reported a fall in net profit by almost half in 2011 on year as it struggled with high fuel prices, but posted a record revenue.

The Malaysia-based airline posted a revenue of 4.47 billion ringgit ($1.48 billion) for the year, up by 13 per cent from 2010, reports the himalayantimes.

In a filing to Malaysia’s stock exchange, it said net profit for the financial year, which ended on December 31, was 564.1 million ringgit, compared to 1.06 billion ringgit in 2010. AirAsia chief executive Tony Fernandes said the results were positive given the challenging global environment.

He said the loss in net profit was largely due to unrealised foreign exchange losses on translation and a deferred taxation.

Stress on enforcement of policy on climate change

Representatives of various government and non-government organizations and political parties have stressed on the need to promote awareness at the grassroots level on climate change, and to bring the related policy and regulations into practice.
Speaking at an interaction organized at Mahendranagar on Tuesday, they said the Government should implement the policy and the provisions of the international treaties related to climate change.
Stating that agriculture, weather and livelihoods have been affected as a result of climate change lately, they said all should become conscious of the impact of the climate change has now made on the wildlife too.
At the program, Chief District Officer (CDO), Basudev Dahal, Coordinator of Clean EnergyNepal, Manjit Dhakal and Sunil Acharya shed light on various aspects of climate change and its impact onNepal.

Int’l tourist guide day marked

Tourist Guides’ Association Nepal (TURGAN), an association of tourist guides in Nepal, on Tuesday marked the International Tourist Guide Day amidst various programmes in the Capital.

World Federation of Tourist Guide Association (WFTGA) celebrates February 21 as International Tourist Guide Day every year.

As a member of WFTGA, TUURGAN also celebrated the day with the theme of professionalism in sustainable tourism. TUURGAN has been a member of WFTGA since last year.

As a part of marking the Tourist Guide Day, some of its members provided free services to tourists at the Kathmandu Durbar Square and the Patan Durbar Square.

According to Hare Ram Baral, president of TURGAN, more than 15 professional tourist guides provided free services to the FITs (Free International Travellers).

Talking to The Rising Nepal, Baral said that the association has underlined the need to offer quality services. Nepalese tourist guides are highly qualified and we are working towards developing professionalism, he added.

Nepal Academy of Tourist and Hotel Management (NATHM) has produced around 3,000 tourist guides until now. Out of them around 1,500 are active in Nepalese market.

Dilli Bazaar Prison adobes three ex-ministers

Dilli Bazaar Prison now boasts of being a high-profile jail, literally, with as many as three former ministers cooling heels here, and the latest entrant is Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta.

Gupta, who was the minister for information and communications in the incumbent Baburam Bhattarai-led government, was sent to jail for 18 months by the Supreme Court today on corruption charges.

Former minister Chiranjivi Wagle has been doing time in the jail on corruption charge since March 15 last year. He was sentenced for five years.

Former minister Shyam Sundar Gupta was sent to Dilli Bazaar Prison on February 17 by Kathmandu District Court to proceed with a case involving abduction of Pawan Kumar Sanghai, a businessman. On February 9, a government prosecutor had filed a case demanding 17-year jail term for Shyam Sundar Gupta and Rs 8.5 million from him and four other accomplices for abducting Sanghai and taking him hostage for 20 days before releasing the businessman for a ransom of Rs 8.5 million.

Wagle, a Nepali Congress leader, when sent to jail was not holding any government position, but Shyam Sundar Gupta, when slapped with the jail sentence was a sitting lawmaker, while JP Gupta was a sitting minister when the court read out its verdict. JP Gupta, also a former NC leader, is currently the chairman of the Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum-Republic. Shyam Sundar Gupta represents Nepal Sadbhavana Party-Anandidevi.

Officials said security was up in the jail. According to a source, JP Gupta had expressed his desire to stay together with Wagle. –The Himalayan Times Daily

Lumbini promoted in Italy

The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has organised a special exhibition at a programme on international tourism, at Milan of Italy, to make the Visit Lumbini Year-2012 successful.

The exhibition was organised from February 16 to February 19. Nepali traditional costumes and materials of touristic importance were put on display in the exhibition. The NTB said that representatives of 50 countries of the World had participated in the exhibition.

The NTB had made efforts to convince that Nepal is a safe destination by publicising about tourism sites of Nepal through a press meet.

Nandini Thapa and Kundan Sharma of the NTB had informed the journalists about the ongoing Visit Lumbini Year-2012.

Ancient cave with valuable artifacts discovered in Khalanga

A new and very strange cave has been discovered at the Nuwakot VDC, south of the district headquarters, Khalanga of Rukum district, RSS reports.

The cave at Dayalekh in Nuwakot-2 throws light to the jungle of Dayalekh.

The eight-meter deep and four-meter wide cave also consists of old stones carved out in the shape of Lord Shiva, Ganesh and a cow, and arts and shapes of various kinds.

The cave was reportedly discovered by herdsmen as they were taking goats for grazing inside the jungle.

Meanwhile, marking the Shivaratri festival, the Dayalekh Cave Protection Committee organized a fair at the cave premises.

The cave will now be preserved in order to support tourism promotion in the area, says local Bir Bahadur Khadka.
