A campaign has been launched here for the conservation of fish in the local Rapti and Narayani rivers.

According to the conservationists, the campaign has been started to save the rare Gharial crocodile found in the rivers. The Gharial species of crocodile is said to be on the verge of extinction due to the lack of fish in the rivers.

It has been found from a study conducted by theChitwanNational Parkthat not even 10 per cent of the Garials released into the river survived.

The Park has released 100 Gharial hatchlings into the Rapti and Narayani rivers this year also in a bid to increase the Gharial’s population.
