Man of Nepali origin vying Hong Kong Legislative post
A man of Nepali origin has fielded his candidacy in the fifth Hong Kong Legislative Council (LegCo) elections due to be held on September 9.
Raju Gurung, 34, has filed his nomination as the representative of an independent panel, Third Force, according to a news report by Kantipur daily. He represents the New Territories West constituency.
Gurung, who hails from Pumdibhumdi VDC in Kaski, has lived in Hong Kong for more than a decade. He runs his own business and is also the president of Rising Nepal, a social organisation that works for Nepali migrants in Hong Kong.
If elected one of the 35 representatives under the geographical constituencies in the LegCo, Gurung said he would work towards bridging the gap between the local government and the minority groups in Hong Kong.
“The issue about the rights of minority communities has yet to reach the local government in an effective manner. This is where I come in. I will act as a bridge between the two sides,” the daily quoted Gurung as saying.
Many people who make up the minority in Hong Kong are deprived of education and job opportunities due to language barrier. Gurung intends to end this disparity. “It’s indeed a matter of honour since I’m the only Nepali candidate in my panel. All other candidates are Chinese. What we need now is unity and cooperation,” said Gurung.
