Excavation underway in Tilaurakot

Excavation of the historical site of Tilaurakot of Kapilbastu under the supervision of a foreign archaeologist is being carried out to locate a site, said to be the place where weapons were made during the reign of Buddha’s father.

Professor Robin Cunningham of Durban University, London has been leading the excavation works that have jointly carried out by Department of Archeology of Kathmandu, Lumbini Development Trust (LTD).

Last year, a five-year agreement was signed to carry out excavation works at the Tilaurakot and its surrounding areas to find out the archeological object dating back to the Lord Buddha’s time, said Bhesh Narayan Darnal, member secretary of this excavation project.

The excavation is being carried out at Lohasariya area from February 4, which lies at western part of Tilaurakot Durbar. The excavation process will end by February 28, Darnal said.

According to him, the area was known for making or designing weapons of iron which used to be brought to the Tilaurakot Durbar.

The objective behind the present excavation is to find out the truth behind the manufacturing of weaponry, he said.

Basanta Bidari, chief of LTD, Kosh Prasad Acharya, coordinator of excavation project have been representing in the ongoing works from the government side.
